*100th Mahasamadhi Anniversary of Sri Sri Lahiri Mahasaya*
Letter by Swami Bhavananda Giri, Dharmacharya, YSS Ranchi
Dear One of God and Gurus,
We are all singularly blessed to have heard the voice of God calling us back to our true home, and to have been drawn by Him to our line of divine Gurus.
This month we will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of the mahasamadhi of our Param-paramgurudeva, Sri Sri Lahiri Mahasaya. Let us engross our thoughts and our hearts’ deepest feelings especially during this special season in awareness of his eternal presence, and his watchfulness over all sincere Kriya yogis.
A great aid to this can be the *careful re-reading of all portions of the Autobiography of a Yogi relating to Lahiri Mahasaya.* He shed new light on the whole of scriptural truth, by showing the divine science of religion heretofore hidden to most behind allegories and symbolism.
As his enlightened grandson, *Sri Ananda Mohan Lahiri* wrote: “The Bhagavad Gita and other parts of the Mahabharata epic possess several knot-points (vyas-kutas). Keep the knot-points unquestioned, and we find only mythical stories of a peculiar and easily misunderstood type. Leave the knot-points unexplained, and we lose a science that India has preserved with superhuman patience after a quest of thousands of years of experiment.
‘Lahiri Mahasaya brought to light, clear of allegories, the science of religion that had been cleverly put out of sight in a riddle of scriptural imagery.”
Lahiri Mahasaya himself said: *‘Remember that you belong to no one and that no one belongs to you. Reflect that some day you will suddenly have to leave everything in this world-so make the acquaintance of God now. Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by riding daily in a balloon of divine perception…. He only is wise who devotes himself to realizing, not reading only the ancient revelations. Solve all your problems through meditation. Exchange unprofitable speculations for actual God-communion.”*
Our Gurudeva Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda proclaimed Lahiri Mahasaya to be a Yogavatar, or Incarnation of Yoga, and said: Apart from the miracles of his own life, surely the Yogavatar reached the zenith of all wonders in reducing the ancient complexities of yoga to an effective simplicity within the ordinary grasp.”
May we use this unique occasion to renew our fervour, and rededicate ourselves to more earnest and intensive sadhana faithfully using the sacred key of Kriya Yoga given to us by God and the Great Ones through Lahiri Mahasaya.
In YSS/SRF ashramas, dhyana kendras, and dhyana mandalis we will celebrate this 100th anniversary according to the international calendar, on 26th September. All Yogoda Satsanga devotees, and especially Kriyabans, should fill the day as much as possible with longer and deeper meditations, and other spiritual observances, as may be possible for you. If there is a YSS dhyana kendra or mandali near you, do also try to attend its programme.
A few choice selections relating to our Param-paramgurudeva are compiled in the enclosed booklet. .. “Among the Saviors of Mankind.” May it serve as an aid to our attunement with our Gurus, and through them with the Cosmic Beloved.
May the love and blessings of the Great Gurus be felt among us all in extra measure during these special days, and help to hasten us on our upward path to Self-realization.
In divine friendship,
for Yogoda Satsanga Society of India
