VIDEO/TEXT “Realizing Our Divinity Within”- Smriti Mandir Dedication ~ Bro. Anandamoy

Smriti Mandir Master

excerpts from

CD/mp3 – Kriya Yoga, Divine Dispensation for Our Awakening Age, Brother Anandamoy – SRF Link

In this talk, given on March 22, 1995 at the dedication ceremony of the Paramahansa Yogananda Smriti Mandir (Memorial Shrine), Brother Anandamoy speaks on Paramahansa Yogananda’s mission to spread worldwide the teachings of Kriya Yoga—illuminating for this age the universal aspect of religion. He explains that practice of the meditation techniques taught by the Guru, including Kriya Yoga, leads one “steadily and surely to the perception of divinity within.” [EXCERPTS]

Finally this day has come where we can dedicate this beautiful mandir.  I remember about three years ago when I was here, the workers had just started chiseling on those crude marble blocks and it was very difficult at that time to visualize this delicate jewel of a mandir.  It is really, truly a beautiful piece of art…and I do not have to tell you that there will be great blessings going to all of you who have helped.

This is Smriti Mandir–smriti means memory–and it is in memory of this great Guru who brought these teachings to us.  As most of you know, he was sent by Mahavatar Babaji and his Guru Swami Sri Yukteswarji, to the west to bring the ancient sacred teachings of yoga, of India, to the West.

He lectured throughout the United States in all the major cities.  He established an organization Self-Realization Fellowship as the instrument to preserve the purity of the teaching and to spread it worldwide.  Just as we have here in India the Yogoda Satsanga Society of India.

He wrote books, he trained disciples, he interpreted the scriptures, especially as commissioned by Mahavatar Babaji, the Bhagavad Gita and the Bible.

I want to dwell on this point a little bit.  Even though he interpreted the scriptures throughout his active years in America, in 1950 in order to concentrate once more on the interpretations he withdrew, he went to the desert so he would be free to concentrate on that work.  And I, I don’t know why, it must have been my special karma, I had the privilege that I was out there with him.  I wasn’t working on that particular project, I did other kinds of work, but in 1950 several months I was there and had the opportunity several times in the room where Guruji was giving the interpretations.

And I wish I could convey to you what that experience was to me, but human language cannot describe spiritual experience. I can only say, just to step into the room where he was working, that room was vibrant with the very tangible presence of God. And I saw that Guruji was in a deep state of inner God-communion.

See also~~Paramahansaji’s 1948 Great Samadhi, Completing His Writings ~~ Daya Mataji

And one of the disciples was at the typewriter, typing the dictation which Guruji gave.  And one remarkable thing, it went on hour after hour after hour without interruption, without pause.  When one monastic secretary was worn out, he called another one to take the place, it went almost day and night.

And the remarkable thing was, there were no pauses to think, to reflect, never a pause. And I knew that he did not give that interpretation through intellect. It came through his spirit communion with God.

And I want to read to you what Guruji said,

“In your search for God in previous incarnations, you may have passed through states of worshiping idols or other material symbols and may have pursued many paths of blind belief.  But now you have come to that point in your spiritual evolution where you realize that the highest truth is to be found within yourself.  At last you have been led to a spiritual path, and a sacred Yoga technique through which you can find God within yourself.  In the centers of life force,” that is the chakras and consciousness in the spine and brain, “the great initiation of Kriya Yoga is given to you that you may awaken the spiritual consciousness within you, and there you find, you realize the divine altar of God perception.”

See also~~The Teaching of Kriya Yoga

And so now, we are honoring our Guru through the opening of this Mandir.  And I would like to say something here.  The greatest way of honoring the Guru is by practice of his teaching.

And so I would like to urge you, those of you who are following these teachings, practice the teachings.  It is a special dispenstion.  The sacred techniques which have been lost have been given again.  This is the essence of the teaching, the techniques of hong sau and aum technique and kriya yoga and energization excercises, they all lead you gradually but surely, to the perception of the divinity within, and then gradually after that into Oneness with God.

Smriti Mandir portrait

And now we are going to open this mandir, and there inside is an image of Guruji, a picture, and I bow as you do, you bow to the Guru.  But keep in mind the principle.  He is not confined, he is not limited to a photograph, or an image.  He used to say to us, “The Guru is always present in the kutastha center of his disciple.”  Another time he would say, “The Guru is always present in the heart of his disciple.”  Another time I heard him say, “When you practice kriya yoga, I come into your spine and do the work there.”  Obviously he doesn’t come in physically, right?  He’s omnipresent!

See also~~KRIYA YOGA: Portal to the Infinite ~ Bro. Anandamoy

And so when you bow before the picture, don’t limit him because that would be contrary to his teaching.  And in your meditations and whenever you want to, you can be in that divine presence because he is right within you and around you, everywhere.

And I would like to encourage you.  With this understanding of these principles of the Guru’s teaching–practice, practice.  It is not in vain.  You may go on for some time and you may thing I’m not getting anywhere.  You will get there because you cannot make a spiritual effort without advancing toward your goal.  Impossible!  But there is a purification which is very subtle which is going on every time you practice the techniques, every time you meditate.  You’re going forward toward your divine goal, leading eventually to oneness with the Infinite, that absolute Infinite Eternal Bliss Consciousness.

You will never be satisfied, you will never have peace until you have that realization.  You can look in the world, seek it in the things of the world, in all people.  You will not find it there because you are the soul, you are divine yourself.  And you will not be at rest until you know that, and you are One with the Infinite, bliss consciousness of God.

“Love your enemies…” ~ Yogananda and Jesus

Jesus Roses smaller

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven… Matt. 5: 44-45

–Jesus Christ

Love and forgiveness form the nucleus of the Christ teachings.  Far more than just a noble ideal, the principle of love is verily the manifestation of God in His creation.  The universe endures by a play between good and evil.  The effect of evil, delusion, is to divide and obscure and cause inharmony.   Love is the attracting power of Spirit that unites and harmonizes.

The vibratory force of God’s love, consciously directed by man, neutralizes the power of evil.  God could instantly destroy evildoers; but instead, He uses love to coax created beings back to Him.

In the simple words, “Love your enemies,” Jesus urged man to cooperate with God in this divine plan of redemption: to love one’s neighbors, and to have a place in one’s love for enemies as well. …Naughty or good, all people are equally God’s children.

DIWALI “Festival of Lights” the Esoteric Meaning ~ Bro. Chidananda, Sw. Sivananda

BRO. CHIDANANDAJI [excerpt from above link]: . . .We have just recently celebrated in India the equally beautiful spiritual observance of DIWALI, the Festival of Light, the celebration of the eternal Divine Light of God that permeates, and blesses all creation. Take a moment just to feel, to realize, to acknowledge that Light in your heart, in your mind, an acknowledgment that, no matter what dark circumstances, what challenges we have to go through, ultimately they are temporary, they are superficial.
What’s lasting and enduring is the Light. The Divine Light of wisdom, guidance, hope and strength–that’s what will sustain us and lead us through all of life’s difficulties, if we open ourselves to it. That’s what the SRF/YSS techniques of meditation do for us. And that’s the message of which we remind ourselves each year at Diwali. . . .As sunlight illumines the whole world, irrespective of man made boundaries, likewise India’s legacy of Light and Truth embraces– with respect, with love, with tolerance the Spirit of Unity–all religions, all peoples, all seekers of the Divine.

(excerpts) SWAMI SIVANANDA:  DEEPAVALI or Diwali means “a row of lights”.  It falls on the last two days of the dark half of Kartik (October-November). ….

Everyone forgets and forgives the wrongs done by others.  There is an air of freedom, festivity and friendliness everywhere.  This festival brings about unity.  It instills charity in the hearts of people.  ….

In a happy mood of great rejoicing village folk move about freely, mixing with one another without any reserve, all enmity being forgotten.  People embrace one another with love.  Deepavali is a great unifying force.  Those with keen inner spiritual ears will clearly hear the voice of the sages, “O Children of God! unite, and love all”.  The vibrations produced by the greetings of love which fill the atmosphere are powerful enough to bring about a change of heart in every man and woman in the world.  Alas! That heart has considerably hardened, and only a continuous celebration of Deepavali in our homes can rekindle in us the urgent need of turning away from the ruinous path of hatred. ….

O Ram! The light of lights, the self-luminous inner light of the Self is ever shining steadily in the chamber of your heart.  Sit quietly.  Close your eyes.  Withdraw the senses.  Fix the mind on this supreme light and enjoy the real Deepavali, by attaining illumination of the soul.

150th Anniversary of the Revival of Kriya Yoga 2011

He who Himself sees all but whom no one beholds, who illumines the intellect, the sun, the moon and the stars and the whole universe but whom they cannot illumine, He indeed is Brahman, He is the inner Self. Celebrate the real Deepavali by living in Brahman, and enjoy the eternal bliss of the soul. …

All the lights of the world cannot be compared even to a ray of the inner light of the Self. Merge yourself in this light of lights and enjoy the supreme Deepavali. ….

Many Deepavali festivals have come and gone.  Yet the hearts of the vast majority are as dark as the night of the new moon.  The house is lit with lamps, but the heart is full of the darkness of ignorance.  O man! wake up from the slumber of ignorance.  Realise the constant and eternal light of the Soul which neither rises nor sets, through meditation and deep enquiry.

May you all attain full inner illumination!  May the supreme light of lights enlighten your understanding!  May you all attain the inexhaustible spiritual wealth of the Self!  May you all prosper gloriously on the material as well as spiritual planes!

First Experience with Paramahansaji ~ BLISS CONSCIOUSNESS

The first time I saw him [Paramahansa Yogananda], he had given a Sunday Service. . . and after the service most people went to him to greet him.  And when I stood in front of him he didn’t say a word, I didn’t say a word, he just took my hand.  And the moment he touched me I was drunk, completely drunk.  Now that was the real stuff.  That was the Wine of the Mystics, you know [audience laughter].

See also~ WINE OF THE MYSTIC, an Islamic Sufi Scripture: The Intoxication of Divine Love and Joy ~ Paramahansa Yogananda

You know, I thought I had experienced joy before.  Then I knew.  He talked about bliss-consciousness.  He gave me just a little more than I could hold.  Unbelievable.  Bliss.  First time a little touch.  Bliss.  And I walked out and I was completely drunk.  I couldn’t walk straight.  I was, I was like this, you know [Brother motions swerving with his hands].  Not only that, I was alone and I couldn’t contain it.  I laughed out loud, just completely drunk.  And people in the street were utterly disgusted [big laughter]  They shook their heads and went way out of my way and I didn’t care.  It took me several hours to simmer down.  So that was the first experience.

Second Experience with Paramahansaji ~ UNDERSTANDING and UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

The second experience was when I had an interview with him.  And he asked me questions, about my studies and about my life, and all that sort of thing.  And I saw that, the way he phrased the questions, I knew he didn’t need any information.  He knew me better than I did.  And that is a remarkable experience, I can tell you, if somebody knows you COMPLETELY.  No ordinary human being can do that.  You know, somebody knows all about you, all the mistakes you have made and everything.  But there was more.  There was understanding.  No judgment.  There was understanding, and UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.  That is a combination–you know you cannot find this in the world.

“He Shall Receive an Hundredfold…Divine Reward” ~ Yogananda, AY

Jesus Christ Yukteswar mission_Collage

PARAMAHANSAJI:  In the Vidyalaya [school founded by Paramahansaji in Ranchi] I had to play father-mother to the little children and to cope with many organizational difficulties.  I often remembered Christ’s words:  “There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, but he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.”

Sri Yukteswar had interpreted these words as follows: “The devotee who forgoes the usual life experiences of marriage and family-rearing in order to assume greater responsibilities — those for society in general (“ an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren”) — performs a work that is often accompanied by persecution from a misunderstanding world. But such larger identifications help the devotee to overcome selfishness and bring him a divine reward.”

Loving greetings and pronams to Gurudev Paramahansa Yogananda’s beautiful spiritual family around the world, as he said, “Scattered like shining jewels over the face of the earth.” ….

In my daily meditations, I think of all of you, and I pray that God and Guru guide your lives and spiritual efforts, and help you to feel a deep and unshakable security in their love and wisdom.  It’s so important to feel, to dwell in that love, that security, especially during these challenging times.

Something More Far-reaching – Hearts and Minds Attuned With God

I know that many devotees around the world are very concerned about the divisiveness and ugliness currently being propagated in society among the increasingly polarized factions of the global family, the family that God intended to live in peace and harmony and mutual cooperation with his moral laws of lasting happiness.  You know our Guru didn’t use the word ‘commandments.’  He spoke of God’s laws of eternal happiness and harmony.  And that is what is under such challenge today.

See~ “ANYWAY”–The Paradoxical Commandments and MOTHER TERESA ~ SRF magazine

“…Moses’ gift from God to man in the form of the Ten Commandments…These are eternal verities, universal laws of life that make man’s existence morally comfortable and spiritually fulfilling.  The word “commandment,” however, does not give the best connotation, for it is as if God is a dictator and man His servile attendant.  These dictums should rather be regarded as a code of natural righteousness.  If man does not follow those laws which evince the divine image within him, he falls out of tune with God into delusive suffering of his own making.”

Paramahansa Yogananda, The Second Coming of Christ

See~ Paramahansa Yogananda, Cecil B. DeMille, Moses and “The Ten Commandments”

Now we all know that this world of duality has always been and will always be a battleground between light and darkness.  But the assault on God’s eternal truths of goodness and moral values can seem perceptibly heightened in our era of near constant exposure to the barrage of negativity that infiltrates our inner and outer environments through the internet and other mass communications media.

But we don’t have to give in to discouragement about the future.  Yes, social media can magnify the inharmonious voice of a single person and thereby affect countless others far beyond that individual’s immediate locale.  But there is equal, or GREATER potential to amplify the influence of truth, beauty, goodness, wisdom, compassion–all the heavenly qualities of the soul image of God in every human being.  How is this so? …

[Patanjali’s] Yoga Sutras considers the “magic” of moral purity (the “ten commandments” of yama and niyama) to be the indispensable preliminary for sound philosophical investigation. …The cosmic order (rita) that upholds the universe is not different from the moral order that rules man’s destiny.  He who is unwilling to observe the universal moral precepts is not seriously determined to pursue truth.  Autobiography of a Yogi

There is something more far reaching than any digital communications technology, and that is hearts and minds that are attuned with God.  Again, more far reaching than any digital communications technology is the vibrational power radiated into the very atoms of the world environment, and into the consciousness and subconsciousness of all sentient beings, by each heart and mind broadcasting station that is powerfully focused through Kriya Yoga meditation, and attuned to the infinite source of goodness–God.

Worldwide Prayer Circle

So never forget how much good you can do by a commitment to daily meditation and participation in our Worldwide Prayer Circle.  That’s a powerful INNER force we can use.  But the divine warrior of light and truth who is drawn to a path such as that of Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society and Kriya Yoga may use OUTER as well as inner means to promote spiritual harmony, or Dharma on earth.  So, while giving FIRST priotity to changing yourself and any unlovely ego traits that may have found harbor in your own consciousness, never be afraid to bear witness outwardly in the cause of noncooperation with un-Godliness, when circumstances place that duty before you.

Just remember though, two things:

FIRST, that animosity and lack of humility may quickly subvert you to the side of that which you are purportedly resisting. And SECOND, that spirituality and truth are not defined by anyone’s political affiliation.

See~ INTROSPECTION and the Inner Battle of Kurukshetra – Maya vs. the Beauty of the Soul ~ Bro. Bhumananda

We have to remember that the mass karma that influences the unfolding drama of world events, in our present era, as well as in all others, is not always understood by a limited, human intellect.  Ultimately a nation’s leaders are a symptom, not a cause–a symptom of the prevailing mix of good and evil in society, and its mass karma.

“Insomuch as we know that by divine law nations, like individuals, are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world, may we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war which now desolates the land may be but a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins, to the need of our national reformation as a whole people?”

Abraham Lincoln

From Bro. Anandamoy’s quote inABRAHAM LINCOLN, “He was working for God”

The Most Potent Way to Bear Witness to Truth

So while the actions of individual politicians may be of temporary concern, more important, in the long term, is the need for the masses of individuals to remove the evils of Godlessness, immorality, adharmic living from their hearts.

See~ INTROSPECTION CHART and “An Effective Way to Tackle Bad Habits” ~ Bro. Premamoy

The most potent way that you can bear witness is to practice each day some principle of the divine truths, common to all religions, which are so beautifully distilled in the SRF/YSS teachings.  This is an active initiative you can take to uplift your consciousness and invigorate your thoughts and actions with the invincible power of God’s goodness.  Every morning read a little, from the Lessons for example, or from the Spiritual Diary, or maybe take a favorite quotation from the Bhagavad Gita or Bible, and make that your theme for the day.  Then when something you hear on the news upsets your inner peace or equilibrium, hold tight to that truth.  And know that by the will that you put into affirming and manifesting it, you are helping to neutralize that negativity.

As you follow the example of Guruji’s indomitable, positive spirit and practice the sacred Kriya Yoga science of God communion–the special dispensation he was ordained to bring to the world specifically for the times we are going through–as you follow that, you will prove to yourself that with the help of God and the great ones who watch over this world, we can aid humanity to emerge from the fetters of ignorance-based fears and hatreds into a world more in tune with God, with his harmonizing and balance-producing love and bliss consciousness.

See~ The 26 Qualities That Make Man Godlike (Bhagavad Gita) ~ Paramahansaji and Sister Priya

1) See Others As Souls; 2) Change Your Focus to the Positive

So I have two suggestions for you: FIRST, look for and concentrate on the expressions of goodness and spiritual consciousness in ALL persons you encounter, even those whose opinions may not match your own, and you’ll find that the very act of paying attention in this way increases the manifestation of God’s presence in this world.  The Lord proclaims in the Bhagavad Gita: “I am seated in the heart of all beings.”  So see others as souls, and by that attitude of respect and appreciation, you’ll suddenly draw from them, and from yourself, a greater expression of soul qualities.

“I am seated in the heart of all beings.”

Bhagavad Gita

SECOND, if you find yourself too frequently thinking or reading or talking about what’s wrong in the world, or in your own life, try to change your focus.  Use that time and energy to think good thought, to pray, to perform good acts of service and generosity, and to work on becoming a person who exudes kindness, understanding and cheerfulness.  By doing so, you will uplift your own consciousness and that of others.

Never Underestimate the Positive Effect of Your Spiritual Efforts

See~ “The loop hole in the law of Karma – Divine Mother’s Love”… Br. Lynne

And most important, as you meditate faithfully, and enter the sacred sanctuary deep within your being where all thoughts are still, you will increasingly feel the love in which God cherishes each soul, and also be able to give that love to others.  Never underestimate the positive effect of your spiritual efforts on your well-being, on those around you and on humanity at large.

Guruji said, “One who in every way tries to uplift himself, harmonizing body, mind and soul with the divine creates positive karma, not only in his own life but in his family, neighborhood, country and the world.”

May God ever bless you as you strive to radiate His light, His love in your life.

God bless you. God love you.

Jai Guru.

The ‘Murderer’ Who Was a Great Saint ~ Yogananda, AY

divine Mother Master 16_Collage
Divine Mother, AY; Yogananda age 16

“You will never meet a greater man of God than the one I saw only yesterday.”

“I see you are crazy about saints!  You will never meet a greater man of God than the one I saw only yesterday.  My brother officer and I first encountered him five days ago.  We were patrolling by the Ganges, on a sharp lookout for a certain murderer.  Our instructions were to capture him, alive or dead.  He was known to be masquerading as a sadhu in order to rob pilgrims.  A short way before us, we spied a figure which resembled the description of the criminal.  He ignored our command to stop; we ran to overpower him.  Approaching his back, I wielded my ax with tremendous force; the man’s right arm was severed almost completely from his body.

“Without outcry or any glance at the ghastly wound, the stranger astonishingly continued his swift pace.  As we jumped in front of him, he spoke quietly.

“‘ I am not the murderer you are seeking.’

“I was deeply mortified to see I had injured the person of a divine-looking sage.  Prostrating myself at his feet, I implored his pardon, and offered my turban cloth to staunch the heavy spurts of blood.

“‘ Son, that was just an understandable mistake on your part.’  The saint regarded me kindly.  ‘Run along, and don’t reproach yourself.  The Beloved Mother is taking care of me.’  He pushed his dangling arm into its stump and lo! it adhered; the blood inexplicably ceased to flow.’

“Come to me under yonder tree in three days and you will find me fully healed.  Thus you will feel no remorse.’

“Yesterday my brother officer and I went eagerly to the designated spot.  The sadhu was there and allowed us to examine his arm.  It bore no scar nor trace of hurt!

“‘ I am going via Rishikesh to the Himalayan solitudes.’  The sadhu blessed us as he departed quickly.  I feel that my life has been uplifted through his sanctity.”
