At last night’s commemorative service for our dear Yogiraj, Swami Ishtanandaji told the wonderful, and slightly comical, story about Lahiriji silencing the crowd. There was an intellectualist in Banares that declared Brahman only approachable through Its Nirguna Aspect (Impersonal). He said that if he could win in a debate that a famous murti would be removed from a temple. Lahiriji’s devotees summoned Him to the debate. But when Lahiriji would respond to the intellectualist, the opposing crowd booed Him and wouldn’t allow Him to speak. Even the intellectualist couldn’t quiet them down.
Finally, Lahiri Mahasayaji, using His Divine Powers, locked shut the jaws of everyone in the crowd! He then explained that to say Brahman CANNOT be approached by Saguna Aspect (Personal) would be to limit the Infinite. Just as water vapor can be condensed into water and then frozen into ice, the Nirguna can appeal as Saguna.
To further His point He summoned holy water from that very temple and had it sprinkled in the mouths of all those He silenced. Only then would their jaws become unlocked! LOL…. AUM SRI LAHIRI MAHASAYA JI MAHARAJ!!!
